Tell me about Calcutta/ Kolkata, India please!!?/?

Tell me anything about Calcutta, apparantly its very cultured, yet still is poor, what is its economic situation like? Does it have a drug problem like so many other cities in the world?

Calcutta which is changed to Kolkata...it is same.
Very poor city and economic situation is not good.
Not sure about drug problems but the Crime is at high.
Be Careful when you walk late nights in unknown streets.

Economic progress along with agriculture
Good educational institutions
Highly cultured and well informed intelligent people, present day more laborious for growth.
Safest place for women and children
No drug - no mafia - no goons - no "Frauds"

The first respondent is ignorant about Kolkata.

Education - Kolkata education is best in India. The problem is Kolkata institution can not teach Professionalism. They teach theory.

Wealth - Mostly middle class. 10% are very reach. World's 3rd richest person LN Mittal is from Kolkata.

Safety - Most safe place in India. Least no. of rapes and molestations. Maximum level of criminal act is snatching of gold chains. Be careful if you are sitting beside window in trains.

Drug - Almost nil. Very few people are addicted - mainly from 10% of those rich people.

Culture - One of the most cultural place in India, All most all the culture related works in India is headed by people from Kolkata.

I have been there for 5 years. That is the best city where every expat feels safe and like at home. All local people are friendly. Living is the cheapest in India. It is india largest city.

Cultures is every where.. Indian culture can be known from the state but not in the city. The city is influenced my western culture... not anymore difference.

Modern style of living, you should visit central kolkata to explore that. Things to see and places to visit are of n number, it will take a month to end up seeing everything.

Not much crime and drugs. Only one crime happens is mostly in few areas, in buses and trains.. The pickpocketers... they will steal your purse or wallet and snatch gold chains. Nowadays it is very rare, but there are a few groups still exists.

Night walk is safe till 2 am. Later than that, it is not safe if you are unlucky and safe if you have your own cab.

Overall, it is a city of joy.
