Computer to be sent to a home and a school in Kenya? |
Hello. I am interested in sending a computer to a child who had medical treatment in the US for a year. She's moving back to Kenya and I want to send 2 computers (to her school and her home). There is a website called xogiving.org We thought we could purchase through that site but they will not let us specify where we want to send these computers. We need one that is solar powered or battery operated with Internet capabilities because she lives in an underdeveloped area. We also checked out classmatepc.com through Intel but can't figure out price or how to order. Can someone direct us to what I need. Thank you. xogiving.org is a very good organization. I think it would be odd for her to be the only student in the school with a laptop, the teachers probably wouldn't know what to make of it. I think you should contact her school board. All you have to do is find out what part of rural Kenya she lives in, and you can get their address and phone # from the central office in Nairobi (these days all Kenyans have phones even the ones in the utmost rural areas) Then after you find out her school, check and see if the organization has any of its programs around that area or even in the country (they might not have it in Kenya) and they will probably tell you that they can make it work but they would need a minumun number of orders..lets say 20 laptops for one class. Then you could probably get family members, friends, churches, even local elementary schools to join in and raise the money. xogiving is a really great organization, there are tons and tons of Kenyan children who have more than enough potential but little to no resources. I've been to rural parts of Kenya and seen some really beat down schools, most didnt even have desks, windows, roofs, books, pencils or anything but most of the children in those schools were brilliant students. Its a shame that by now most of them have either dropped out or been kicked out of school. If you find funding a classroom with laptops too overwhelming you could always just send school supplies. A 60 pound carrier costs about $200 to ship to Kenya. You could stuff a box with notebooks, paper, pencils, erasers, markers, pens, e.t.c and ship it to the girls school and to her house. Alot of the rural schools seriously lack school supplies. They literally have nothing. |
