How long do you think these women are working for? |
http://phototravels.net/kenya/kikuyu/pho... Their working hours are probably not fixed. It looks more like a "work as much as you can until the job is done" sort of project. I'd guess that they'll be working for the entire season farming, perhaps even two seasons. Not doing this same task, but doing this (rotating the soil), and then moving on to the next steps in farming (planting, watering, harvesting, etc.). A long time I suspect, not just in hours but in their lifetimes. I think sometimes we take modern farming techniques for granted but it wasn't so long ago that we tilled the fields justlike these people. These is an example of the many women's micro-organizations. Each woman has a farm (shamba in Swahili) of her own, but they choose to all work on one shamba at a time then move to another's .They are preparing the shamba for planting. It will probably take one day (approximately 10 hours) get it done. They will come together again for weeding, harvesting and sell their produce together at a better price than they would have individually. You should understand that tractors and other mechanical equipment are too expensive for most farmers in Kenya. They usually work from very early in the morning at around 4.30am to around 10.00 am before breaking for breakfast till the following morning. They enjoy working in groups. |
