Peace Corps: Kenyan Sign Language Project?

Anyone Done It? I just graduate from Cal State Northridge with a BA in Deaf Studies, fluent in American SIgn Lanuage, not sure what to do with my life now and I heard about this. I don't know anyone who has done it, and everyone I have talked to thinks I am insane, but I think it sounds amazing. Thoughts?

It does sound amazing, but the crime is sky high, infact this would be the worst time you'd choose to go there. Iv been there, i know. But if it truely makes you happy, follow your dream.

A great idea. Go for it. I'm a deaf volunteer myself, and the decision to volunteer is strictly personal, and thus if you gfeel you want to volunteer, go for it, don't mind what other people say.
I'm now into my third year in Africa, (The Gambia, West Africa, working with Deaf people, not with the Peace Corps, but with VSO, the British organisation. VSO = Voluntary Services Overseas. American volunteers are accepted, and for Americans, they can go to Canada, and then the UK for pre-departure training. www.vso.org.uk. (all flights are paid for by VSO, so you don't have to worry on that score)

VSO and the Peace corps could be argued to be rival organisations.)

One thing though... I'd find out first if you can actually volunteer for the Kenyan Sign Language project. Sometimes the agency picks the volunteer for the project, NOT the project for the volunteer.

Should you decide to volunteer, let me be the first to congratulate you.

One thing though... there are issues for Deaf volunteers that just do not apply to hearing volunteers, so if you are deaf or hard of hearing, let me know, and i'll give you more information.

I guarantee that if you sign up for the US Peace Corps, or VSO, you'll never regret it. Let me ask you... the people who say you are insane... have they volunteered? If not, how could they possibly know? In fact, it would be insane NOT to volunteer.

Good luck!

Kenya is a great place - the people are really friendly and if you take the neccessary precautions, you would have a great time. SO please dont be put off by people telling you about crime etc!

don't worry about the crime. sure you have to be careful in Nairobi and Mombasa but that is the same with any other city. Look at crime in NYC or Chicago. Kenya is great and outside the major cities there is not really much crime. have fun!

are you sure it is not a wind up? is there such a thing in Kenya? ....................if there is it will be very worthwhile!
