Yes, Kyoto (specifically the Gion district) is known for its geisha. Actually, Kyoto is the cultural capital of Japan, so it also houses many of the temples.

As some of the above already said - Kyoto namely the Gion and Pontocho districts. There are a few geisha in other cities such as Tokyo but they are very very rare. I've never seen a Tokyo geisha in 6 years here but I've seen quite a few each time I visit Kyoto.

If you want to see them but can't afford the huge sum to be entertained by them, just hang around those two districts especially on the weekend and you'll see geisha and maiko going to and from tea houses and the like to do their performances.

There are also geisha dance performances put on in April, May, and November which cost around $35-40.
