How to dress for an indoensian wedding?

I'm going to attend a wedding in Indonesia this Dec.

The folks are from Jakarta but they are going to hold the wedding at the kampung sampireun. It's going to be a 3 day thing over the weekend..

Okay seeing that it's going to be a daytime type deal. I didn't want to dress in an evening gown or anything too fancy.. Also given that the venue is very tropical I also didn't want to wear something too fancy yet nothing TOO casual either.. Make sense?

wedding in Indonesia is celebrated with grandeur party, almost like movie star's wedding in the states with hundreds of invitations. Dress up is a must, men wear their suit (not tuxedo since it's not common here, only the groom and his best man wore those) and women wear their best. Many times we have guest from abroad and they are surprised on how people dress up for wedding. so i strongly urge you to dress up too. Indonesian will show off their jewelery, diamonds (you don't need to bring lots of them for security reason, after all the wedding is in distant area from Jakarta, but you still need to put on some metal) and their branded stuff. for 3 days wedding, you have to prepare 1 dress for the actual ceremony, and at least 2 (more simple dress) for the ritual. There will be traditonal ceremony (ritual) like Ulos (for batak tribe, where the non batak, in this case the bride, will be awarded a piece of traditonal clothing as symbol of batak tribe represent their level in the society and all) and for javanese there will be siraman, where the bride to be and the groom to be being washed by water from 7 diffrent sources, in separate place, to wash the past. At night before the wedding there will be midodareni, the bride and the groom, also in separate place, will be taught about marriage life, just chatting practically.
So you need to look casual (as you said not too casual too) for those ritual and look glamorous for the wedding celebration.
for the glamorous look, i don't think you need an evening gown like Cinderella. just wear a dress:)

Take something conservative. there is probably a 100 percent chance that the relatives will dress you up in traditional clothes anyway.

yep. traditional clothes and by the sound of it... it's a Sundanese wedding? If so, I think you're going to wear a kebaya.

simple short (not too short) dress that not too fancy its OK than kebaya I think.

Kebaya or Batik would have been a great choice, but it might not be that easy if youre not even familiar with those, or if you don't even know where to shop for them. Instead try this alternative:
- for women, wear at least below the knee length dress in simple colors like blue, or chocolate, or maroon, or brown, instead of bright colors like aqua, fuschia and such. The dress should also be conservative, instead of midriff baring, cleavage baring or back baring. Indonesia is conservative mind you. Shoes, makeups, hairs are according to your taste and prefs. Indonesian women usually do really teased high-up hair and heavy makeups on weddings.
- For men, a dark suit with tie would be fine. It's even okay to forego the suit, and just wear long sleeve with tie.

Old chinese kebaya (kebaya encim). Light and elegant. And no need to set your hair as complicated as javanese wedding hair ceremony. And no need high heels.
