Sumatra is huge. As you probably know, Aceh is a province in Sumatra, and unless you are devote Muslim, you probably don't want to stay there. If you do stay there, you need to bring your marriage certificate with you if you are rooming with a man in a hotel. Sumatra is home of the Sumatran Tiger, but you probably won't see one unless you trek through the jungle for quite a long time. It's tropical. Flora and Fauna are much like Java & Bali -- lots of orchids, exotic flowers, home of the world's largest flower (can't remember the name of it right now), horses native to Indonesia, surfing, lots of forests & beaches. Given the extreme poverty, it can be quite dangerous. Hire a driver, lock your doors, carry little cash, keep your passports in a safe, and be suspicious of anyone who comes up to talk to you.

You can find some information and data on Encarta or WIkipedia.

u can find all the answer in here

I suggest you to invest on the good travel book such as Rough Guide. There are more information about than you might find in internet

I'm from Sumatra.
But I don't really know about them.

the biggest lake in Sumatra is Danau Toba
thebiggest city in Sumatra is Medan

Sumatra is so big and has variety of culture. is really can't be describe in just words... must be with books... and i doubt it if those books can explain it either.
so it's tropical, sun shines all year long, humid, rains a lot. beautiful slim girls and tan men. coffee should be excellent.
So my advice, just relax, everything will be ok. just remember to be polite and try to understand things instead of questioning or judging things that goes around (superstitious etc) you'll do great. Indonesian are very warm and friendly in nature. i'm sure you'll do fine and will enjoy your new post, afterall it's paradise.
