Can anyone recommend some good books about living in or visiting Indonesia?

I'm moving to Jakarta for a year, and I haven't been able to find many good books on the country. Of the major travel guide series, only Lonely Planet seems to be up-to-date. I've ordered that as well as Jakarta Inside Out and Jakarta at your Door. I'm really looking for books about living in the country, but some good tourist guides would be helpful as well. Thanks!

Okay, I found a few:
- Insight Guide Indonesia by Francis Dorai. (This book has great photographs, but readers still prefer the Lonely Planet Indonesia).
- Footprint Indonesia Handbook: The Travel Guide by Joshua Eliot, Jane Bickersteth, Liz Capaldi, John Aglionby. (The Business Times Singapore calls this book the most complete guide for travellers to Indonesia).
- Bahasa Indonesia: Book 1 : Introduction to Indonesian Language and Culture by Yohanni Johns, Robyn Stokes. (To get you started learning the language).
- Michelin NEOS Guide Indonesia by Michelin Travel Publications, Michelin Travel Publications. (Perfect for today's generation of travelers looking for "real" and emotional journeys, the NEOS collection features lively descriptions and rich anecdotes as well as maps, itineraries and information on hotels and restaurants.)

Hope the above list helps, I found these books from Amazon.com, so you can read up the reviews of each book as well there. Welcome to Indonesia.

There is a really good web site for expats that provdies lots of useful info about living and working in Indonesia.

If u are already in Indonesia, I suggest u to go to Gramedia and ask the people there to recommend u.

you can try googling them down. it might work. good luck

When my family lived in Indonesia we generally used word of mouth rather than travel guides. Other expats or Indonesian co-workers/friends would recommend places. As far as books, Culture Shock! Indonesia is a good one, Eat Smart in Indonesia (my brother got Typhoid from street food, so be careful!), The Global Etiqutte Guide to Asia, my favorite is Behave Yourself by Michael Powell. It's a basic guide on how to conduct yourself anywhere in the world. Good since you'll probably also be travelling in other Asian countries either for business or pleasure.
Also, the British Women's Association and American Women's Association (probably also the Canadian and Australian just to cover the English speakers) put out guides to life in Jakarta. They are a bit more skewed to expat wives, but you may want to contact someone you already know over there and have his wife get you a copy. They go over some of the really good grocery shopping (places like Caswell's Mom), etc.
