Indonesia is the biggest archipelago in the world. It is the fourth most populous country and the 15th biggest country in the world. It has the 15th largest economy in the world after South Korea and before Australia, which makes it the fifth richest country in Asia. It is also the 13th most powerful country in the world. The president of Indonesia is Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. What do you know about Indonesia. it isnt rich at all..
they are poor.
chinese r being treated unfairly.
mosquitoes are all over the place.. million times more than malaysia. I was just there. The people were very friendly. Most are Islamic, but there are large Christian and Hindu populations. The big cities are crowded and not so nice. There are some beautiful places to visit ranging from tropical beaches to inland lakes and jungles with wildlife.
The country has a lot of problems with weather related disasters as well as earthquacks. Lately they have had a lot of transportation problems like planes crashing and boats sinking. All in all, I like the place to visit and would love to go back. "which makes it the fifth richest country in Asia" >> in fact, it's a rich country with poor people living inside...
for updated news about Indonesia, here are some sources :
www.metrotvnews.com (using Indonesian)
www.indonesia.go.id/en (using English) There are alot of muslims that live there. Indonesia was a Dutch colony for over 300 years until just after WW2. During WW2 the Japanese occupied Indonesia in order to make use of Indonesia vast natural resources. Indonesians "cooperated" but practised passive resistance. They would do the jobs the occupiers demanded, but slowly and production was frequently sabotaged. A few days after the Japanese surrender, Sukarno, who had cooperated with the Japanese, declared Indonesian independence and himself president. The Dutch recognised Indonesian independence a few years later.
A lot of the anti-Chinese sentiment in Indonesia is directly related to the anti-Communist sentiment that was common in democratic countries in the 50s and 60s. Communists in Indonesia attempted a coup and the government responded with a Communist purge that is estimated to have killed close to a million people. To add to what you know...
Indonesia is emerging fast as a major manpower exporter from Asia, competing with countries such as Philippines, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and India. The main markets for Indonesian manpower is the Arabian Gulf states and a bulk of Indonesian workers there are domestic helpers or maids, with some employed in the energy sector.
Bahasa Indonesia is the country's main language and English is not commonly spoken in the country, which is evident from the fact that Indonesia, for its size and population, has only one English daily newspaper- The Jakarta Post, with an estimated circulation of 40,000 copies daily.
Indonesia is an archipelago (Nusantera in the local language) and sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire that makes the country prone to earthquakes and other seismic disturbances. It has several known active volcanoes, two of which carry the same name- Mount Merapi, which in ancient Javanese means Meru (mountain) Api (fire). In 2004 December, Indonesia suffered heavily from the Asian tsunami that its Aceh province and reconstruction continues in that region till date.
Indonesia, in ancient times, was ruled by the Hindu dynasty- Majapahit. About 400 years ago, the country was colonized by the Dutch who named the capital, Batavia (modern day Jakarta). Islam was introduced to Indonesia by traders from Gujarat, India, and the country today follows a policy of religious liberty, moderation and freedom. Though Islam is the main religion, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and other variants of tribal and Chinese forms of worship are permitted and protected by the state.
Other than Jakarta, the capital, the other main cities of Indonesia include Surabaya (2nd largest city), Yogyakarta, Banjarmasin, Mankowari, Padang, Batam, Semerang and Medura, among others.
Indonesia is now recovering from the authoratarian rule of its former president Suharto. The country has been the target of some vicious terror attacks against Western tourists in recent years, including the Bali bombings and attacks in Jakarta. First, I live in the capital, Jakarta. it is a very polluted, traffic clogged city, mostly because the gov. doesn't have the initiative to build a good mass transportation system.
Indonesia's second largest city is Surabaya, which I was born in. It is very hot there, sometimes even hotter than Jakarta, temperatures can reach higher than 95'F in the summer.
Indonesia is rich in it's wildlife- Javanese rhino, orangutan, bird of paradise, etc.
Probably almost every tourist from Australia has visited Bali. Tha island is famous for their beach resorts, seafood restaurants, and occasionally you can see world famous surfers "riding the waves."
About the gov. unfortunantely there is still lots of corruption in the governemrnt, especially in the House and Senate. I praise the current President and his admistration for working hard to fight terrorism, but it seems that Indonesia still has a long way to be a "clean country."
I'll say one thing good about the current administration, they are and I hope will be continually successful in fighting terorrism. There were no terrrosrist attacks that toook place in Indonesia last year. During the previous presidents(Wahid, Megawati) terms, there has been at least a terrorist attack each year. i know a lot cause i was born there.. it's very dirty and poluted, many politicians are corrupt, the people are rude and mean but beside that it has many culture and language.. I kindly interest to know history of Indonesia.
I like old tradition of Indonesia architectur also.
I know not much about Indo, That's why I come around What do I know about Indonesia?
The Capital city is Jakarta,
its currency called Rupiah (Rp),
Bhineka Tunggal Ika as its motto which means Unity in Diversity, The first President is Soekarno, the second is Soeharto then B.J. Habibie then Abdur Rahman Wahid then Megawati Soekarno Putri who is also Soekarno's daughter, then SBY.
Declared its independence in 17 Aug 1945, the national athem, Indonesia Raya, was again sang by many people after the Sumpah Pemuda in 28 October 1928.
Bali is the nation major tourist destination locally and internationally.
The volcanoes are very active and there are a lot all over the archipelago.
The land of paradise... I don't know why you have stated Indonesia was a richest country in Asia,if you calculated to Singapore rates about $0.50 equal to Indonesia rate about R$1000.00.Why don't you said Singapore was a Second strongest Economic Country, Indonesian are very lazy people, don't work properly for us,cleaning only one place and not continue to others, that why their economic dropped behind Singapore. A rich country you're right, but not rich people, so many poor people live in this country. You are right, Indonesia is the biggest archipelago in the world, it has 5 big islands ironically Java Island as the smallest being the most crowded.
Independence Day is August 17,1945 against The Dutch who had ruled the country for 3,5 centuries.
Our main resources are rice, mining (oil) (even though they have been imported some rice from neighboring ASEAN countries).
The soil is very fertile and being the country which is under the RIng of Fire, they have lots of mountain areas and volcanoes. (that is why there are some series of earthquake)
People are friendly and basically helpful. Modern community nowadays at least can speak one international language.
We have lots of nice beaches and Bali is probably the top tourist attraction island in Indonesia.
there are 5 religions recognized by the law, Islam being the largest in number.Even though you might have heard many bad stories about our country, I would still consider it a very safe place to live. People in the neighborhood lives in harmony (we have town council and even 'Arisan' for housewives in every neighborhood). Which other country have the similar kind? That is why the community like to help each other, thus the term 'Gotong Royong' means 'helping each other'
Transportation has been serious problem in many major cities, including Jakarta. 'Busway' has been implemented around 2 years ago but some considered this as not the way. 'Bajaj' a small orange transportation vehicle originated from India will soon be changed into 'Kancil' which is more enviromentally friendly and have less noise.
Hopefully any of this information will help you to know better about Indonesia. |
