Hawaii- Road to Hana (like colorado scenic bypass?)?

Couldn't be any worse than going through scenic bypasses in Colorado, where mountain roads twist and turn through a mountain. A lot of people are freaking me out by saying it's a terrifying ride and you are overlooking the cliffs down to the ocean. It doesn't look this way on google maps.

The road to Hana is not any worse than driving through mountains. And it is beautiful!! You see jungle areas, numerous waterfalls, taro fields, black sand beaches, red sand beach, and so much more. I was in Maui last week, so the road is still fresh in my head.

Print out this page- it highlights many of the stops along the road and tells you what mile markers to look for. Very helpful.

Don't let people scare you into thinking that there is no where to eat along the way. There are various places to stop, however it can get a little expensive. We ate lunch at the Hana Hotel, which wasn't more expensive than other Hawaiian restaurants.
Also- make sure you allow enough time to make it back down before it gets dark. This means you should try to get a very early start. The person working the desk at our hotel suggested we leave Lahaina as early as 6 am.

It is like the road to hell. Very slow and winding and several places there is only room for one car. Do not make the mistake of going close to dark like we did-it is really bad in the dark. Waterfallsyou see at the end are NOT worththe trip!

I actually think that the drive itself is "worth it". But yes, there are lots of hairpin turns, one lane bridges, & places wehre it is a sharp drop off to the ocean. I have done some scenic mountain driving in Colorado & I think ir is quite similar, with the addition of the water.

I've never been on the Colorado Scenic Bypass but I have travelled the road to Hana several times in my life.

It's a very beautiful drive but it is full of windy turns, one lane bridges, and places where nothing is between you and the edge of the cliff but a rusting guardrail. It is quite long (especially if you get behind a slow moving car) so be prepared for that. There are no restrooms between the beginning of the road and the end so plan accordingly.

Once you get to the end, you should definately get out and stretch your legs checking out the scenic views, the waterfalls, and Hasegawa General Store.

No most of the time you're close to th ocean level, there are a few one lane bridges time from the main airport is about 3.5 -4hours depending on how many stops you make, tons of waterfalls around every bend, and by the way the Hasegawa General Store burnt down, you might consider stay for one night, theres a hotel, called the Heavenly Hana Inn, it coasts about 100 bucks, but is a house you can have 2 couples stay in
