I'm planning of going to rio de janeiro..help?

i want to go on hols there but a lot of ppl say that at opecabana beach there are robberies and its not really safe..if its a tourist trap then where would be the ideal place to stay
and places to avoid??thanxx!!;)

We went to Brazil a couple of years ago... people were saying the same things. When we got there, our hotel told us to be careful too! We too all of our usual precautions, then we walked and cabbed and bussed around Rio with no problems.

Things like don't wear flashy jewelry or expensive clothes... leave your valuables at home. Wear a money belt... lock valuables in your HOTEL safe (not the room safe) when you go to the beach. Don't wander off the main streets at night. Stay aware of your surroundings, if you careless leave your purse on the floor next to your chair at a restaurant, it's apt to be gone... but that's anywhere, not just Rio!
