Is there some sort of accent in Nova Scotia like there is in Newfoundland? |
I heard a Newfoundland accent and I thought it was pretty cool and since Im moving to Halifax, i was wondering if there is an accent in Nova Scotia. Hi! Maritimers definitely have distinct accents. Nova Scotians don't sound like Newfoundlanders, but yes, if you're not a maritimer you certainly hear the accent. There is a very slight accent in Nova Scotia as compared to Newfoundland. If you are Canadian, it may not even be particularly noticeable to you, especially in the Halifax area. There are many Newfoundland accents, depending on the part of the province the person comes from. A heavy Irish accent is predominant in many parts of the province - in fact Newfoundlanders have been said to sound more Irish than the Irish themselves. Settlers to Nova Scotia were more likely to be of Scottish or English ancestry, and so the accents are still there, though not nearly as obvious as in Newfoundland. |
