How long does it take for a Guatemalan in Guatemala to get a passport? What is the procedure?

Is there a website where I can find out more information?

In America, we went (in 1999) to Chicago, Illinois (we are from Missouri and that is the closest one) to get a Guatemalan passport for my husband. It only took a few minutes and cost nothing except for the passport pictures (about $15 at the time) which we had to have with us when we arrived. We also needed his Guatemalan cedula. But, now I'm hearing that with all the new laws that it takes several weeks just like an American passport. There should be a Guatemalan console at least in Guatemala City, and probably other cities as well. You can apply at one of those, or possibly a court house there.
I'm sorry I do not have a web site for you... I'm not that good at this computer thing just yet, but try searching yahoo or google.
I wish you good luck!
P.S. I just did some research for ourselves and found lots of information by seraching on yahoo for 'Guatemala Embassy'. There is tons of info there!

you might e-mail the embassy or consulate in the us - they could direct you to the appropriate spot in Guatemala:

See our Foreign Entry Requirements brochure for more information on Guatemala and other countries. For further information regarding entry, exit and customs requirements, travelers should contact the Guatemalan Embassy at 2220 R Street, NW, Washington, DC 20008; telephone (202) 745-4952, extension 102; fax (202) 745-1908; e-mail at info@guatemala-embassy.org; Internet web site - http://www.guatemala-embassy.org or contact the nearest Guatemalan consulate (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, or San Francisco)..

I live in Guatemala, and if you want to get a passport you go to the Immigration - Passport Office

It takes about 1- 2 hours from the time you enter in the office til the time you get your passport.

You need to have with you by the time you go to get the passport:

-Photocopy of your id (Cedula)
-Copy of the payment to the bank
-Copy of the tax which is needed to pay annualy to the city

Then you go there, the employees of the office, ask you some data to fill some forms, then they take you the picture and you sign and then you wait till they give you the document.

All the procedure takes about 1-2 hours.

Now in Guatemala you can get a passaport easy, this last 1-3 hours. You pay in Inmigration office banck and keep the receip, also need your ID (Cedula de Vecindad) and a Boleto de Ornato.
