Retireing In Guadalajara,Mexico. How Do I Get My Mail?

Depending upon your needs, I have several suggestions.

First, have as much correspondence as possible done through the Internet or by using a Vonage or other (VoIP) provider. You can set up email options for most investments, financial services, etc.

Second, if there are statements or items (such as credit cards) that you do NOT want to risk losing, you may want to consider using a relative or VERY trustworthy friend as the recipient of those. If you will return periodically to the US (and there is no rush on those items), that may help you to receive those safely.

Third, if you have family members or trustworthy friends who will travel to see you periodically, you may have them bring mail down to you from a post box that you maintain in the States. They will have to empty it periodically, however, as the US Post Office is NOT fond of boxes full of accumulated mail.

Fourth, you may want to use a mail forwarding service. Some are more "formalized" than others. The more formal ones are NOT inexpensive. We currently use PMI here in Mexico and they have excellent service, including logging of all mail items and sorting of mail so that you don't receive what you don't want (they throw out unwanted "junk" mail before forwarding, so your costs are less).

You may also want to talk to other retirees near your future home. They may have other suggestions for using local sources.

I bet you are going to live in the Lake Chapala area of Guadalarjara. You could try and do a "forward of address" with the post office. Or you could have prepaid giant envelopes and have someone gather your mail and just send it to you directly. On the back of your bills there is a box that says "Check here for change of address." Give those a try.

We use a service here in Mazatlan, called Post and Ship, that hand carries it twice a week from the states. Our mailing address is actually Laredo, they recieve it there, then bring it here.
