Do Greeks normally have middle names?

Do Greeks normally have middle names?

Not very often - there are times when two names are given (2 grandmas) and they are joined like Marialena (after Maria - her gran and Eleni - her Gr Aunt)
Like Nicky wanted and didn't get (I did cos I'm bossy .... and I bribed the priest) - My eldest daughter has two names - because I'm an awful Nifi that couldn't bring myself to call my daughter Arkondia after my M.I.L ... so we agreed it could be a middle name. My sister has done the same with her son as she dislikes the name 'Spiros' her father-in-law ... plus there are 3 other kids named after him!

Actually it's the father's name that separates the children .(not middle names)... eg (3 Spiros Vazaios - there's Spiros tou Michalis - Spiros tou Andreas - Spiros tou Yiannis)

Sometimes, but usually not.

No, at least not where I live. I wanted to give a middle name to my baby but I was told I couldn't as would not be recognised. I think this may be an old fashioned tradition, and many Greeks may now be doing it, it's better really especially in a small community where loads of people have the same name, a middle name would separate them from the others!

Why the thumbs down, is my answer incorrect? I had a girl but if we had a boy he would have been called Mixalis (no choice there) and I wanted to give him a middle name after my Grandfather, it almost caused world war 3, there were tears from my MIL, the works! So in the end I thought it best just to give in, heaven forbid involving my family in my sons name, the scandal!! Thankfully we had a girl and chose a name we liked rather than name her after my mother, then I was tolld I could give her a middle name if I wanted, I told them to shove it.

Like the others said, Greeks are not usually given a middle name, as it is frowned upon by the church. Nowadays, though, it seems more common to find children with middle names than used to be the case in the past.

Some confusion is created by the fact that the father's name often functions like a middle name. In official documents, for instance, it is common (especially for men) to sign their name, followed by an initial that indicates the father's name, and the surname, as in "Fanis I. Kakrides". In very formal occassions the same person might be introduced as "Fanis Ioannou Kakrides".

These practices can create the impression that some Greeks use middle names, although -strictly speaking- it is usually not the case.

It is not common. Two out of my 3 children have middle names. The reason; my first born got my father in laws name and hubby wanted to also name after his uncle, which had no children. The 2 just one name (boy). The third got both grandmothers names.

some might have middle names, but its not a common thing so most greeks wouldnt

No, most Greeks don't have middle names, but it does seem to be becoming a bit more common.
