Does Greeks have a recycling program in their home?

i.e. different color bins for plastic, paper, and organic waste to give to the city/town during grabage collection.

If not...are their any recycling programs in place?

WE DO,,AND I HAVE STARTED A ORGANIC COMPOST HEAP WHERE WE THROW ALL THE KITCHEN STUFF IN THERE, IT HELPS BELIEVE ME...AND SAVES MONEY TOO, AS WE EVENTUALLY HAVE OUR OWN COMPOST.

WE TRY AND USE VERY FEW PLASTIC, RECYCLE AS MUCH AS WE CAN...

Officially there are a few EU programs that Greece has to comply with. One of which is the use of the colored bins for initial recycling differentiation of garbage.
The follow up process is the glitch in the whole process, since it has never been clearly stated what happens from there on.

For most of the smaller towns the recycling is mainly an individual business according to the environmental conscience each one has.
Composting of all organic household and garden materials is my main effort for the past two years and the result is highly rewarding for the very little effort put initially.

Yes.
Yes.

Not where I live unfortunately, and coming from the UK where I recycled everything, it really upsets me. there are serious environmental issues here that need to be addressed, but I just get laughed at being a foreigner.

I'm hoping that people will realise that a beautiful island is turning into a rubbish dump, and with just a little co-operation from the council and residents, a recycling programme could easily be put in place. To be honest I can't see anyone here being bothered to do it though, they are very stuck in their ways and don't like change.

They did try to do it here in Ipirus - by giving us special blue bags to fill with bottles/cans/plastic bottles - and a special blue bin next to the normal ones - I think it took two weeks for the locals to fill the blue bins with normal rubbish!
I think you're expecting too much from a nation of litter bugs! If I had a euro for every person I saw throw rubbish out of the car window (adults and kids) - I'd be a rich lady!

Can we first have toilet systems that toilet paper can be flushed down instead of a disgusting bin next to the toilet .... before embarking on saving the ebvironment! Is Greece the only country that wipes its bum and puts the poo covered paper in a bin next to a toilet???

We only have a blue bin next to the normal rubbish bins for ALL things recyclible (sorry if the spelling's wrong). Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that uses it. I can't remember how many times I've seen people put plastic bottles etc in the ordinary rubbish. It's always full up with cardboard boxes too. Either people don't realise what the blue bin is for or they don't care and can't be bothered to sort out their rubbish. It's a shame.

Recycling is just 鈥渒erasaki sthn tourta鈥? talking about the environmental issue in a (non third鈥檚 world) city. Think about China: this county where come electronic equipment from every part of the world, to be recycled, while Pekino is one of the most polluted cities in the world!
