How important is etiquette in Greece and how does it differ (if at all) from the list below?

Modern etiquette instructs people to
Greet relatives, friends and acquaintances with warmth and respect
Refrain from insults and prying curiosity
Offer hospitality equally and generously to guests
Wear clothing suited to the occasion
Contribute to conversations without dominating them
Offer assistance to those in need
Eat neatly and quietly
Avoid disturbing others with unnecessary noise
Follow the established rules of an organization upon becoming a member
Arrive promptly when expected
Comfort the bereaved
Respond to invitations promptly.
Accept gifts or favors with humility and gratitude.
Acknowledge gifts or favors with prompt tokens of thanks (e.g. a thank-you card)

I still try to do most - however being in Greece so long has allowed me to

Have open curiosity - I stare at people!!!!
Dominate conversations!
Eat noisely - quickly and often full mouth- talking loudly
Not respond to invitations
and
Not send thank you notes (although I do call to say thank you the next day)

I've been laughing for 10 minutes!! The only thing from the list that I would say greeting relatives and friends bit, it's always done warmly as if you haven't seen them for years and the Greeks are VERY hospitable. However, I have made some amendments for the Greek list

Insult as much as you can, especially in front of others at social occasions and refrain from using tact as much as possible
Wear jeans or clubbing gear to weddings, baptisms and funerals, and remember, full make up and skin tight clothes when picking children up from school
Eat as noisily as possible and make sure others can see the contents of your mouth
Make as much noise as possible and as late as possible, especially if you live in a polykatikia.
Never follow rules, make up your own.
Arrive late or not at all, and NEVER call to explain why.
When someone is bereaved, tell them life goes on and to get a grip.
Take the gift and throw it on the bed with the rest that you will give to your mother in law
What is a thank you card???

I'm ready for the thumbs down, but where I live all these are true! No offence meant to anyone, but I have learnt all this from my husbands family!!

What an excellent question!

In my experience, greeting people with warmth and respect does apply in Greek culture, as does offering hospitality. I guess that offering assistance to people in need and comforting the bereaved also apply somewhat.

Most of the rest do not seem to apply, though. Surprisingly, most Greeks appear to be quite proud of their "relaxed" attitude towards etiquette.
