Whats the best way to make friends in Athens, Greece?

I visit Athens two or three times a year (for a week or two at a time) to visit my Greek father and would love to make some friends there to spend some time with during my visits.

I dont really know where to start. I'm 40 and speak very little Greek. I dont really want to stike up conversations with random people - any suggestions?

Myrina - yea I have loads of cousins however - they all have their own lives/jobs/families etc

Gay whorehouses - Athens is full with them (ancient Greek heritage)

What nationality are you? Maybe it's easier to get in with the local foreigners in Athens - and from there you'll meet Greeks.

How about Going down to Kafenion of the neighborhood and buy the Drinks for every body and tell them that you like to make some friends there buy two three rounds and you 'l have many friends after !

Since your father is Greek you probably have some Greek cousins or other relatives who you can make friends with.
Next, any friends your father has? What about their sons and daughters? Ask to be introduced to them.
You can go to the Athens University Club - Ippokratous & Akadimias st - they are offering short courses in Greek for foreigners. You'll meet other visitors to Greece and along with your Greek teacher you'll arrange going out together. Each time you return you'll meet them again and learn some more Greek.

Are those the only places you know of in Athens? Gay bars are very few compared to those in other European capitals.

I see that you have excuse for most of the answers given you of how not to make friends. Perhaps you should concentrate on how to make friends. Language should not be a problem a simple "Hi", a smile, and a common cause should do the trick. You should also choose your friends and don't let others choose you as a friend.
