How much is French spoken in Greece?

I'll be traveling to Greece over the summer, and I understand that English is fairly common. However, I'm also a speaker of French and was wondering if French would be useful in Greece, too.

English is part of every kids school curriculum - and nearly every child goes to evening school to better their English and pass the exams. French (I presume) is the next foreign language after English - lots of teenagers know the language - but you'll get by better with English.

It also depends on which part you'll be travelling to. Here in Ipirus lots of people speak German as many have returned from many years in Germany, where they went to during the 60s/70s for work.

You could always try learning a bit of Greek if you're good at languages!

well, in schools in Greece they teach kids French. But you wouldnt go in a store and ask for something in French. At all!!! OBAMA '08 ALL THE WAY!!!

English will do fine. Greeks take more foreign language in school than Americans and many can speak a variety of languages, but English would probably serve you best. Try picking up some Greek before you go too! Have fun!

The previous answerers are correct, just English is enough and will enable you to communicate well with almost every Greek you meet. There are many Greeks who know a bit of French too (i do for example), but entering a local shop and saying " Bonjour madame, est-ce que vous pouvez me donner...." would just get you a polite smile and the following reply "Do you Speak English?"!

Most of the youth speaks French but English is much more commonly understood by the youth and elderly.

French is spoken very often as well.
