Is Sarasota FL a great place to live or is it really just "God's waiting room"?

I'm moving to Florida soon with my wife and 12 yr old boy and we were wondering what life there is really like. I know there are some of the countries best beaches there, but beyond that, what is it really like.

I live there and the only bad thing is that the airport dosnt really have a lot of flights to diferent places and there is a lot of good beaches and restarunts and there is also a lot of good communities to live in and also the people are really nice
