Altitude on road signs?

In the States I have noticed when you go past a towns namesign by the road it often says - Little Taddlecombe Alt 3520

What use is the knowledge of the altitude of the town?

Well, this is very common , esp. in western states. It is just an interesting fact, for one thing. But , also, once you get over 5000 ft, the altitude affects many people in several ways...esp. people who have any type of respiratory or cardiac disease. Even healthy people will often feel out of breath, esp. with activity, and they may have headaches, nosebleeds, and extreme fatigue. When you drive through mountain passes in the west, there will be signs that say "10,000ft." or "12,000 FT." Unless you are acclimated to high altitude, you can pretty much expect a headache.

It's for all the information geeks and for those that find facts like that interesting. I myself like to know at what altitude I'm in, to compare with the weather, ease of breathing, how my car is running, etc., etc. I wish the government would do that in Costa Rica where because of mountainous conditions, you never know where you're at (altitude-wise).

What use is population or when the town was founded? They're on signs as well.
It's just a little factoid.
