Why is the motorway speed limit in the states so slow?

I mean 55mph, you can cycle faster than that. I've been there no one will go near 60mph, they are really strict. Yet here we go up to 90mph sometimes more.

It started in the oil supply crisis of the early 1970's, and the reason was fuel conservation, not safety. It later proved to be a safety factor as well. For a long time, the Federal government imposed it on all states by announcing they would withhold Motor Fuel Tax revenues from any state which set a higher speed limit. That is no longer the case, and many states have raised the limit in non-urban areas to 65, 70 or even 75. 55 is still general in urban areas.

that's cuz we drink and drive and you don't

It is more of a saftey thing. the slower you go the less chance you have of being in an accident. or as severe. But I ussualy go at least 80ish. 55 is way to slow.

In the southern states, the speed limit is 70 and they will generally let you go over by 10mph. But the other states say it is for safety, but that is BS. The reason is, that they want to write more speeding tickets. Our highways are actually built for 80 MPH travel. Tractor trailers included. So I think it just a reason to fine someone money. I know that OH really sucks for this.

Because the death and injuries rates dropped as soon as we lowered the speed limit.

Even though it is a state law to determine the road speed limits basically the national government dangles money in front of the states saying, "we want the roadways to be at 70 mph max"... Basically highways are not to exceed 70 mph, and other roads are not to exceed 55 (I think could be 60). It has something to do with the change in the drinking age going from 18 to 21. The cops usually give you about a 5mph leeway on the local streets and a 10 mph leeway on highways. That's just the way our government wants it to be; I really couldn't tell you why they don't want it more than 70 max.

I just learned this in American Government (college level) like last week, but I can't remember intricate details of the lesson... oops.
