Best place in England for a young American girl?

Say someone in her 20s who enjoys pretty much everything. City or small town doesn't matter. And please tell why.

Bristol - large city, with a big new shopping centre from autumn 2008, in addition to the two we already have. Large student population, with two universities, and therefore a good nightlife. Not too far from London - it can be reached by train fairly easily. The divide between city and country happens really fast - you can go from inner city to countryside in a matter of 10 or 15 minutes, which is really nice.

North of England is really nice especially around the Lake District. That is if you are looking for views also though not England, Scotland is very beautiful for the same reason.
A night out in Newcastle is great as is Leeds and the big smoke (London). I would suggest any university town were you'll meet plenly of people the same age as yourself.
