Do i need a passport at any time to travel by car from the US to Canada and back?

Travel.gov states that a drivers license is acceptable when traveling via land, why are people telling me i need a passport?

Two people gave you the CORRECT answer when they quoted the WHTI...it says that for LAND travel you need a photo I.D. AND proof of citizenship like passport OR birth certificate. The requirement for passorts for LAND travel has NO SET DATE...as stated in the WHTI info. People who say you need a passport are operting on RUMOR...not FACTS...they just do NOT read!!!

yes

yes.

yea

Nope, they NEVER check. I have been back and forth many times and they dont even have checkpoints.

when we drove to buffalo NY, we needed passports to get into canada.

not yet but you will soon

or an id but a passport is your best bet wait why do you think your friends would lie to you ?

starting in january 08 this year you have to so yes

I think that it is now a requirement to have a passport to comute to and from the U.S. and Canada.

i dont think so, but better safe then sorry

Not until June 2009. Just some form of ID.

JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver鈥檚 license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.

this is from http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbp...

so don't argue

I'd take a passport just to be safe. I don't believe it's required for travel from the US to Canada, but since it is technically international travel, better safe than sorry.

no, ..not that i know of, ...ive been there and back and they stop you at the border ask why you are visiting or whatever, ...check the car out, etc...thats about it.

The US government's become particularly antsy about people crossing borders. They basically made it so that you have to have a passport to go anywhere but within the 50 states.

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security鈥檚 website.

LATER
At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.

Effective January 31, 2008: "U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver鈥檚 license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time."

Just take it with you.

Maybe, check with their embassy or call the INS.

yea they always check for there rules

They check now.
They never did before, but now they're saying that we need to see a passport to let you in..

Yes; security may ask for it when you go thru customs. Also, within three years, Homeland Security plans to require that everyone traveling by air have something very much like a passport, even domestically. I never hurts to have one. Good luck!
