Is there a smoking ban in Switzerland?

I am going to Verbier and wonder if you are allowed to smoke in public buildings - bars clubd etc?

No, there is no smoking ban in Switzerland. I was in a ski resort in a valley just next to Verbier for a week until yesterday. On the first afternoon we went into the local pub and my mate asked if it was ok to smoke. The barmaid looked at him like he was crazy then said "yes, why not?". However, we did learn that one could be being brought in in the future.

Even though you didn't ask, I can tell you that the snow in Verbier is quite good at the moment, nice and powdery. Although some bits are slightly icy.

Apparently not. There was a guy on Radio 5 live this morning saying he had been in a Swiss bar recently and had forgotten what it was like after only a year of the ban in England.

Not in Vaud (where Verbier is), as far as I know, only in Ticino (Tessin). A few places are smokefree, but not many in my experience.

Verbier is in canton Wallis and there is a smoking ban in this region since the first of March of 2007. In fews words you can麓t smoke in Verbier and in the whole canton of Wallis in public buildings.

Well I must say I had no idea the Swiss had gone down that road until now myself. Never been to Switzerland anyway and see no reason why I would go there. have not got millions of dollars to lodge just yet away from the tax man.

Wnat to clarify one thing: VERBIER is in the canton of Wallis (Valais in French).
Yes, you can still smoke everywhere in Verbier, like most part of Switzerland, in public places.
