Good and cheap accommodation in the city centre of Barcelona?

I am going to visit Barcelona for a few days in April. I would like to stay in the city centre of Barcelona in a clean and affordable place. Could you please recommend any hostals, pensions, hotels, etc that you might have stayed there or have heard about?

You don't want to stay in the apartment we did. But I'm sure others they carry would be fine.

Have you looked at a Lonely Planet book? They list hotels, hostels, etc and give feedback about what to expect. When I went to Spain, I photocopied a couple pages of accomodations and selected my top two or three. Then when I arrived in the city, I knew what my top choices were. Reservations aren't always optional or reliable, but if you have a few options and aren't traveling during Semana Santa, you'll be sure to find something.
