"must see" sights in North Island?

Travelling from Australia in May for 2 weeks. Any suggestions?

hmm, all over NZ you can view all the different lord of the rings filming locations, like the hobbit holes in waikato, which you can actually stand next to the holes they used in the movies

northern part;
bay of islands, near auckland, very beautiful, auckland for the cafes, shopping, rainbows end theme park and the sky tower,

bay of plenty;
rotorua for a yellowstone park type of theme with geysers, lake taupo for bungy jumping and lots of other similar activities, the huka falls, the green and blue lakes, mt ruapehu/ski fields

hawkes bay;
napier for its unwinding atmosphere, has been compared to a mini miami, but without the beaches(although the nice beaches are a short drive away) and the wineries and a plenty in hawkes bay

wellington; is a good mini metropolis type of city with cafes and plenty of stuff to do

either way you look at it, these are only a select few of the things there are to do in the north island, but i have to say you should check out the south island as this is probably more adventurous and more to do and see.

hope this helps

Auckland is like any city - nothing special. Wellington is cute - has really interesting museum.

Rotorua is really fun - lots of hot springs, mud baths, zorbing and adventure stuff - make sure that you throw away the clothes you wear there -- will smell no matter how much you wash (sulfer - rotten eggs).

Loved napier and hawkes bay - great art deco architecture, vineyards, scenery.

Cape Reinga and the 90 mile beach.
Bay of Islands and the Hole in the Rock.
Auckland - Sky Tower, Kelly Tarlton's, Waiheke Island, West Coast beaches. Check out the Internet as it is hard to know what your specific interests are. Bungy off the Sky Tower or the Harbour Bridge or vertical bungy in Victoria Street.
Rotorua - Agridome, Rainbow Springs, Museum (For a special experience), Te Puia, Tamaki Tours, Wai-O-Tapu.
Taupo - Bungy jump, Huka Falls Trout Fishing.
Waitomo Caves.

By the time you have finished all this including the travel between all of the destinations you will ahve used up your two weeks. New Zealand is a BIG little country and it takes time to get around.

Kiwi Pete has more or less the same answer that I would give you.
That is because we've both been in the same business.
NZ has absolutely everything crammed into it that the whole of the rest of the world has. It's just on a smaller scale.
It depends on your own unique interests as to which direction we should point you in.
