How do New Zealanders generally feel about Americans?

I'm an American and I'm going to college in New Zealand in February.

Kia ora,
I'm from American but I live in New Zealand and attend University here.

Many Kiwis have asked me if I'm Canadian.
At first I thought it was my Midwestern accent.

Now, I don't know for sure but I have been told it is because the Canadian visitors get testy if they are asked they are American. So it is more polite (and possibly less inflammatory) to ask a person with a 'certain accent' if they are Canadian!

The last person who even bothered to ask, just wondered if I was from North America.

All my Kiwi friends are very kind and supportive and they are a multicultural bunch themselves.

A lot of my classmates have the typical Kiwi Anglo-Saxon Scottish/English heritage, many are Maori, some are Asian, others are Australian, and there is a good mixture of students whose family ties are in Germany, India, China, Fiji, South Africa, Japan, the Philippines, etc.

So don't worry about whether or not you are going to fit in or if you will be liked.

As a rule, I've found them tolerant of my accent, and don't hold the dealings and actions of my country (or its leader) against me.

So come on down and relax, you will have a wonderful experience.
=)

Not bad on the barbie...

Thats an impossible question to answer because there are about 4 milion New Zealanders, and each one has their own views, beliefs and feelings. Generally NZ is a socialist democracy, so there is a strong lefty bias there, Im sure even they understand its not Americans who are invading oil rich countries, its the so called leaders, of those Americans who are sending the troops in, and they are richly deserving of contempt, for their warmongering ways.

Well, I'm not a Kiwi but I spent a few months there and my impression was that they are welcoming to everyone who visits their Country and would not be prejudicial towards Americans but I got the impression that they are not at all impressed with the USA. If it makes you feel any better, they are even less impressed with France but would welcome French people.
You'll probably have a great time!

same as others

well it kinda depends most dont care and ask you to say things that american say differently to us kiwi's and we love accents that are strong !

Kiwis feel the same way that the rest of the world does, Americans very nice people that are very self-centred.

I,m a South African living in New Zealand and believe me when I say that they are one of the easiest and friendliest people on this earth. Since I cannot speak for them all, I could safely say that they would feel the same way everyone else does. But if you came over here and encountered a problem with them then you would have to look at yourself for the answer. Americans unfortunately, have an opinion of themselves but the rest of world could not care less. If you come here just do as the kiwis do and don't expect them to dance to your tune. Like they say: When In Rome, do as the Romans do, and you'il be just fine. Good luck, it's a beautiful country.

It's a beautiful country what UNI u going to? what ever one u choose I'm sure it'll be great, a few must see things:

Sky tower
Rotorua
Beehive
Southern lights (Stewart island)
Rainbows end (NZ biggest theme park)
Aquatic Park (pools)
