Going to Mexico from Texas. want to be on the boarder, where should I go??

Hi I live in Texas and my husband and I want to drive to Mexico. Maybe stay on the boarder (dont want to drive to far in because of gas/time/and money). Id love to go to cozumel and stuff but I beleive thats way too in. (i have no idea really, i know nothing about this.) any ideas where I should go? some where closer to the boarder but some where nice. any advice is great!

There are many things to do and see when visiting northern Mexico by way of Texas. One of the more popular visits is to take the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railway. It's one of the most scenic train trips in the world, it plunges travelers into 85 tunnels and over 37 bridges through Mexico's Copper Canyon. And traveler safety is very visible as the Federales are patrolling the train at all times. A stop and visit with the Tarahumaras as well, though. Those extraordinary people are every bit as important to experience as is the beautiful scenery. Highly recommend! http://www.railsnw.com/tours/copper/copp... http://www.copper-canyon-tour.com/

Why don't you get on the Internet and find a town near where you are in Texas,,that way you could Map Quest it,,,and also check out the local Town and lodging>>Just a suggestion???

Hey, I'm doing the exact same in May & can't wait. I'm Irish & will be in McAllen, Texas for a conference & it would be a shame not to cross over.

So, i've been in touch with some tour operators from the area & have gone on the online discussion boards like Trip Advisor & Travellers Point, etc.

Having looked at it thoroughly, my plan is to go to Brownsville which is right on the border and only a few minutes from the city of Matamoros in Mexico. According to most reports, of all of the south Texas border points, this is one of the safest. I've been advised to stay away from Reynosa & Progresso.

If you'd feel more comfortable travelling with a group, the Original Tour Co depart Brownsville at 9.30am & 4.30pm daily. The owner, Melba, has been doing border crossings for 35 years. My plan is to go in with her, stay overnight in the Best Western as its considered very safe & is in the town centre & just a block from a lovely open market area. Oh & being in Mexico, its like $60 a night.

You'll need your passport & proof of citizenship & according to my copy of the Insight Guide to Texas, if you're bringing your car you'll need all the documentation. You'll also need to get an automobile permit, which you can get at the border point & will cost under $20. At the border you will also be given a temporary import permit for your car which you should keep safely as you may be stopped & asked to show this document. Apparently is mandatory to obtain Mexican car insurance too & the guide book recommends Sanborn company which has offices throughout Texas also.

Hope this is all of help, can't wait for my trip. Hope you'll enjoy yours too.

I would suggest not driving into Mexico without checking your auto insurance first. When we went last year my insurance rep told me that my insurance is not valid across the border. Also while we were in Texas we were warned many times about crossing in Brownsville. This seemed to be where everyone was getting robbed and some even murdered.

It depends of where are you going to cross the border... If you do it through Laredo, Reynosa or Matamoros, then I can suggest you to visit Monterrey, it is 2 hours from the first, 2 and a half from the second and 5 hours from the third.
It is a fantastic city, plenty of things to do, and breathtaking mountains. Caves, Lakes, Museums, planetarium, zoos, (a thematic zoo an hour from the city) Parks, Malls. You will get a good time in Monterrey.
Look at it at google earth.
