Is it safe for Americans to study abroad in Bolivia?

I'm in love with indigenous Andean culture and I found what looks to be the perfect study abroad program in Cochabamba, Bolivia. I know that the United States has done some pretty awful things in Bolivia, however, and I wonder if it will be safe for me to live there for three months.

I would love to study abroad in Peru, but the problem is that I don't speak fluent Spanish - which is required by most programs - and I don't have a lot of money - which is what cuts out most of the other programs.

Hard to tell. In the past there has been unrest in Bolivia, basically between pro and anti Evo Morales (old coca leaf grower turned president) and chances are there will be more unrest in the future. You'd be better off going to Peru.

Concur with MSDC. Go to Peru--lots of study abroad programs there. And you probably won't have to worry about political upheavals.
