Is it safe to live and work in Bogota and Barranca in Colombia with Family?

I got a one year contract in Bogota and another year contract in Barranca in Colombia. Somebody told me it is a dangerouse place for drug smuggler. I intend to take my family with me. Any comment / advise will be highly appreciated.

Bogota is very safe. Barranca is not.
I would not go there in a car
I would not go, its way too far..
I would not live there, the paras rule
If you are american and go.. you are a fool.
Seriously, not a good place for a non Colombian family.

Bogata is safe, I dont know about Barranca

Bogota is very safe, there are plenty of foreigners living there. You can live with your family without problem. Barranca is dangerous, not because of drug smugglers but because of guerrillas and paramilitars. Better not to go there as a foreigner.
