Can someone explain the history of the Trevi Fountain to me?

Trevi Fountain in Rome, Italy

The Trevi Fountain (Italian: Fontana di Trevi) is the largest 鈥?standing 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide 鈥?and most ambitious of the Baroque fountains of Rome. It is located in the rione of Trevi.

In 1629 Pope Urban VIII, finding the earlier fountain insufficiently dramatic, asked Bernini to sketch possible renovations, but when the Pope died the project was abandoned. Bernini's lasting contribution was to resite the fountain from the other side of the square to face the Quirinal Palace (so the Pope could look down and enjoy it). Though Bernini's project was torn down for Salvi's fountain, there are many Bernini touches in the fountain as it was built. An early, striking and influential model by Pietro da Cortona also exists.

ehm sorry but it's long and takes time to type it, why don't you just look for it on google?

This is what it says on Yahoo's travel guides. If you want more detail, just search for it. There's tons of info about it.

"Tradition has it that throwing a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain guarantees a swift return to the world's most beautiful city. Anita Ekberg's dip in it was immortalized in Fellini's 'La Dolce Vita', and Italian actor Toto even sold it to an American, passing himself off as its owner. Earlier it was the setting for the award-winning "Three Coins in the Fountain" motion picture, ensuring its popularity worldwide. Designed by Nicola Salvi for Pope Clemente XII, it was completed in the second half of the 1700s. The statues in the centre represent Neptune supported by Tritons on either side while rococo-style Poli Palace provides the perfect backdrop."
