What's the best place to visit in Italy?

Lake Garda, Sicily, Tuscany, Rome...

I'm not neutral on the subject, but I'd say you should visit Venice!
I'm not saying is the best part of Italy ever, but it is UNIQUE in all its ways.
All Italy is beautiful and really enjoyable to visit.
Big cities go for the most between tourists: Rome (it is wonderful), Florence, Naples (be aware about rubbish at the very minute), Verona, Like Garda (really nice, but Like Como and Lake Maggiore are as cute as the first), Mantova, Turin (I couldn't really suggest Milan... it is mostly a modern city), Bologna, Ferrara, Cento (cute place famous for its Carnival), all the countryside in Tuscany (especially in Spring - every town around there is particular and seem to belong to another time), Trento, Cortina (for skiing and beautiful Dolomiti's landscape), all Sicily for the sea the sun the food the language and the antique landscape...
I've never been to Sardinia (I should someday), or to the most of the South (my bad... big distance though when I was little).
Puglia is a wonderful place for what friends and relatives told me. Capri is really nice too, all the Romagnola Coast is really touristy and crowded in summer (best beaches if we talk about events and fun times).

I don't know what else to say to give you some idea about my country =)
I can only suggest tryin' to touch most places if you can. Trains aren't that good (not as Swiss Trains) but they do work somehow (mainly long distances ones). Try that way if you'd like.
Every region is different and worth to see (at least partially).

Rome of course. It is stunning. See it all, taste the food, talk to the people, SHOP!!. Then travel the rest of Itally. Beautiful

Lake Garda, the top end is favourite, Limone is especially nice.

it depends on what you are wanting to see and expierience....we have very nice beaches, mountains, and countryside......the weather is usually very nice(hotter in the south, and cooler in the north), the food varies - in the south it is more seafood and pizza, in the north is more ham and pasta....... im sure wherever you go you will enjoy it :) many people from america I know have enjoyed Venice, Roma, Lake Guarda, and Torino.....

The whole of Italy is worth a visit. Perhaps a coach tour covering several places would at least give you a taste of its beauty.
Rome for its history, the Sistine Chapel, to throw coins in the fountain, to perhaps see the Pope on his balcony.
A trip covering Garda, Maggoria, Simone (not sure about the spellings for these) but absolutely beautiful.
Venice and Vernona (to do the Romeo & Juliette balcony "bit").
Obviously you need lots of holidays to do the whole of Italy but I have not yet found a "dud" place.

Go to Tuscany to see the best countryside, villages and towns - Florence, Siena, Viareggio and the sea

Rome has the most for tourists.

You could divide the places lto see in Rome into three parts, which correspond to the layout of the city. The part with the ruins contains, among other sites, the Collosseum and the old forum, as well as Capitoline Hill, whichich overlooks the old forum.

The Vatican, known locally as Vaticano, lies on the west bank of the Tiber River. A tour of the grounds themselves and of the Sistine Chapel is worthwhile and should take up about half a day in the daytime.

The area downtown with the fountains and piazzas should give you an opportunity to look at the fountains. The Trevi Fountain, or Fontana Trevi, is worth seeing. The Spanish Steps are very awesome, and people seem to spend more time sitting on them than actually climbing them. A vist to the Spanish Steps should give you an opportunity to meet a lot of people, including a lot of tourists. The view from the Spanish Steps is also nice. Going for walks and sampling the food is also fun.

You can vacation in Rome and other parts of Italy without spending too much money if you plan your trip well and in advance. Downtown Rome is not difficult to navigate by foot, but subways are also available for transportation. You can take a city bus as well.

Tuscany, including Florence and the Tower of Pisa are two other worthwhile places to see.
