I found a great place within a minute of Piazza San Marco for Carnevale in Venezia two weekends ago.

Last March I stayed at Hotel Torna Buoni in Florence. It was great! Wonderful location, in walking distance from everything and in a very safe part of florence. Close to the train station too! They had a good (free) breakfast too! And the staff spoke great English, so that helps!

If you're in Florence, eat at the toro bianco (white bull) it was a great meal!
