This is a memorable visit if you haven't already been there -- children and adults love it...plenty to see/do around Kanyakumari. Enjoy

Kutralam Waterfalls
--------------------------------------...

The village of Kutralam, also known as Courtallam, is situated 135 kms north-west of Kanyakumari at the base of the Western ghats.

This village is a popular health retreat and is known as the 'spa of the South' due to the exceptional waterfalls. With unusual medicinal properties a bath in these waters has a soothing and invigorating effect on the entire physical system. There are nine waterfalls, with the 60-metre high Main Falls being the only one in the village which, is a five minute walk from the bus stand. Its rock face is carved with old Hindu symbols that are visible only during the dry months of January and February. Other falls easily accessed by bus include the picturesque Five Falls (5 kms from town) and the Old Falls (8 kms away). The falls are very popular especially during the monsoons. During off-season the falls are reduced to a trickle, and you have to jostle for a bathe under the stream.

You have to first reach Kanyakumari. There are frequent buses from Chennai to Kanyakumari (16 hours). From here take a bus to Tenkasi, the nearest major town, 5 kms to the north of Kutralam, which is connected by frequent minibuses. Tenkasi is also the nearest railway station but trains stop 6 kms east at Shencottah, from where there is one express daily in either direction.

There is very basic accommodation in the form of lodges which are usually full during the peak season. There are a few hotels with decent single/double rooms with AC, non-AC option.

Most of the lodges and hotels take care of your regular meals and have decent vegetarian and non-vegetarian fare.

The monsoon season from June to end-August is the best time for a visit. The average temperature throughout the year is around 22 degree to 23 degree C.

The nights during the monsoons can be cool so carry light woollens with you.

You can combine this with a trip to Srivilliputtur, one of the 108 sacred Vaishnavite sites, built of wood, bricks, and plaster and rising up to 13 storeys, excluding the roofs. The Srivilliputtur Reserved Forest has a wildlife sanctuary that is the only known habitat in the world of the grizzled squirrel.
