How long can I legally visit a friend in Canada? Can I visit for several months?

I'm not clear how long constitutes a "visit" in Canada before you have to get a visa or work permit.

Depends on where you are coming from. Check with the Canadian Consulate in your country to find out. There are different visitation limits and there are different requirements for getting visa or work permits - they don't automatically happen.

When you arrive at the airport, it states on the stamp you get in your passport that you can only stay for a max of 6 months. But they are within their rights to restrict you to 6 weeks if they think you are going to try to settle in Canada.

As a tourist,you can stay in Canada for up to 6 months.

You can visit up to 6 months - but you cannot work if you do that.
