What information exchange between US/Canada border?

I was wondering when I leave USA to enter Canada and again entering to USA what information is exchanged between US/Canada border? When I am entering USA, do the border people know when I entered to Canada? They always ask you how long you stayed in Canada.. what if my information is not accurate?

beenther.. What I meant to say is unintentional inaccurate information. For example one can visit for 8 days but when asked, he can answer 7 days(which is not intentional). Although I personally think they dont have the data when one left US to Canada because one of my friend was asked the same question and he said 2 weeks by mistake when he stayed for 5 days only and US border person didnt even find that one.

It is standard question it means nothing unless your name is Mohamud and you smell like gunpowder. Or may be if you are just not white enough

If "your information is not accurate" you have reason to be concerned. Also, why would we want to let you into Canada if you are planning to lie at the border crossing?

Most of the time customs asks that question because it relates to goods and exemptions, for example you are allowed to bring alcohol or tobacco back after 48 hours, and you are entitled to $400 in goods duty and tax free. So if we know how long you have been absent from Canada or USA then we are able to determine your exemption. There are also many other reasons that you may be asked how long you were abscent from the country you live in or how long you plan on visiting a country. The answer is yes to the information exchange, it is possible to determine what time, date, port of entry, line, officer, how many people in the car, and how long you said you planned on staying for.

The border personnel are much less interested in the precise details of your answer than in your psychological state when you answer it.

If you are asked how long you are staying in Canada, then instantly break into a cold sweat and start weeping, then practical psychology tells him or her that you are upset about something and that a further conversation is warranted
