What do you need to get into Canada as of 2008?

Am a US citizen who is planning on vacationing in Canada soon. What do I need to get across the border? Will just a birth certificate and license work?

Yes, that is exactly what you need as long as you are not flying. If you fly you need a passport.

They constantly postpone the passport only dates, and it isn't scheduled to change until next year now. The above answer was for flying last summer only.

To get into Canada isn't a problem I don't think, but to get back into the US now I think that you need either a passport or because of the backlog they will now give you a receipt that you've applied for a passport and you need that to accompany your drivers license + birth certificate. DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS FOR SURE, but I thought I heard something like this on the news.

Into Canada: drivers license or some sort of picture ID.
If you are driving you will need some sort of picture government id to get back into the usa.
if you are flying you will need a passport to get back into the usa.

The eventual requirement for a passport is a US government requirement for people re-entering the USA.
