What type of id is needed to enter Canada from the United Staes and come back?

If you are a US citizen you do NOT need a passport if you are driving, only if you are flying. If you are driving a government issued photo ID such as your driver's licence and proof of citizenship such as your birth certificate is all you need.

You now need a valid passport to leave and enter into any country, including Canada, you used to be able to get by with a drivers license/birth certificate....but no more.....passport or you stay put.

The type of ID required depends on the method of travel you plan on using.

Flying - A valid US Passport

Land - A government issued photo ID such as a Driver's License AND your birth certificate. Of course if you have a Passport then all you have to do is bring that instead.

Sea - The same as by land.

Initially a US Passport was to have been required as of January, 2008 from all travel. This was postponed until July, 08 and has been further postponed by Congress until 2009. The actual date to require a passport has not been set and the actual ID will depend on whether alternatives have been approved during the interim.

You now need a passport!
