How is the date written in Canada?

May seem like an odd question but what format is the date written in Canada? In the US it is month/day/year and in Australia and the UK it is day/month/year. Does Canada follow the American format or is theirs different?

It's day/month/year 13/feb/2008 or 13/02/08 however some people do follow the US format like feb13th, 2008 and/or 02/13/2008

Actually, it is a great question ! I wasn't born in Canada but I'm living in Canada right now and I'm so confused because I've seen so many different ways they write the date here and even names. It goes like this: year/month/date , month/date/year , and date/month/year. The problem is that sometimes I can't tell what is what because Canadian usually write only 2 last digits of the year and if the date happen to be less than 12 I do not know which is the month or which is the date
And as far as how names goes . I've seen how names are written here in Canada :
Family name, your name your middle name.
Your name, your middle name your family name.
Your name your family name
some people here have their first names as some other people's last names. It is so confusing with date orders and names orders in Canada.
where I am from date/month/year
family name middle name your name
Have you seen today write like this ? 08/02/13 y/m/d

We do it the British way. Today is 13/2/2008

I don't think there is any "official" way of doing things. I have worked for the federal and provincial governments across Canada and there is no continuity. Both ways you listed were used; and the provincial government's case-the Manitoba government writes it different from Ontario government.

I'm going to have to point to Wiki on this one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_da...
You'll notice Canada is screwed up as we are influenced by the UK, the US and by the French (Quebec)

in conclusion, we don't follow one set format.

If you are talking about everyday people in ordinary circumstances, we say it like this:
Feb.14/08 or 2/14/08

both

I'll have to agree with Ottguy and Cariad on this one...Canada may have an "official" standard, but you will have a hell of a time finding anyone who sticks to that one standard.

My preferred methods are:

1) DD-MMM-YYYY (13-FEB-2008)
2) YY-MMM-DD (08-FEB-13)
3) DD/MM/YY (13/02/08)
4) YY/MM/DD (08/02/13)

In general, I use the first one wherever possible. It matches the Quebec way (where I am situated), goes in order from smallest to largest, and the shortened month name makes it easy to distinguish it from a day.

Think about it...You send a bill to someone for services rendered and the due date is written "03/10/08". Do they decide to pay you on March 10th, or can they justifiably argue that they thought payment was only required on October 3rd? Hard to make that mistake when it is written 10-MAR-2008.

It's Day/Month/Year here, usually. But it's not a set in stone rule or anything.

it depends I use dmy, but my wrist watch uses mdy and in my business we use ymd. My daughter who was born here uses mdy because that is the way she was taught in school.

BTW that isn't an odd question it is a good question.
