Why are roundtrip flights between Brazil and the US more expensive if the itinerary begins in Brazil?

Flights from Sao Paulo to Detroit (or Chicago) and back are about %20-40 more than flights from Detroit to Sao Paulo and back. Why?

Because the Brazilian gov regulates the sector. It麓s pathetic.
Now they are saying the international flight prices will fall up to 50% due to new regulatory measures, but honestly I dont believe it.

so far.. this is the cheapest place i've found to buy tickets to Brazil. I bought tickets from them the last 2 trips. From New Orleans to Miami to Sao Paulo I pay about $700 on a non touristy month.

Did you also know that Brazil sells I-pod for the highest price ever? US for $140 and Brazil $370 dolars!

The government has a lot of power and charges high high taxes, therefore everything regarding flights, importing cars, importings electronics is far more expensive than in many other countries!
