How many tenses are there in German language ?

I have studied German for who knows how long..!!!! And what the hell..?? I don't know a simple thing like that..!! And I know why..!! Because the classroom lessons are very often based on fully theoretical way of explaining and going through things..!! And what normal human being will learn like that ?? Not for long at least.

So what are the tenses then ?? (If you traslate them to english) Pls pls pls give also examples in German. And how can I complete an exercise where I have to fill in the gaps of a sentence with a verb that I have to transform to that special tense. What are the rules of.. is it called ..conjugation ??

Say..' Ich ______ kein Brot, aber meine Schwester ______ zwei Br枚tchen.' (essen, nehmen)

In German we have:
Pr盲sens (Gegenwart) present tense - ich gehe (I walk)
Perfekt (Vergangenheit) past tense - ich bin gegangen (I have walked)
Imperfekt or Praeteritum (Mitvergangenheit) past simple - ich ging (I walked)
Plusquamperfekt (Vorvergangenheit) past perfect, pluperfect tense - ich war gegangen (I had walked)
Futur (Zukunft) future tense - ich werde gehen (I shall (will) walk)
Futurum exactum or Futur II (Vorzukunft) future perfect - ich werde gegangen sein (I shall (will) have walked)

So your sentence in the above order:
Ich esse kein Brot, aber meine Schwester nimmt zwei Br枚tchen.
Ich habe kein Brot gegessen, aber meine meine Schwester hat zwei Br枚tchen genommen.
Ich a脽 kein Brot, aber meine Schwester nahm zwei Br枚tchen.
Ich hatte kein Brot gegessen, aber meine Schwester hatte zwei Br枚tchen genommen.
Ich werde kein Brot essen, aber meine Schwester wird zwei Br枚tchen nehmen.
Ich werde kein Brot gegessen haben, aber meine Schwester wird zwei Br枚tchen genommen haben.

Wenn filling in the verbs you will have to use the to the subject of the sentence (in person and number)
ich - 1 st person, singular - ich gehe
du - 2nd pers. sg. - du gehst
er, sie, es, nouns in subject case sg. - 3rd person sg. (er geht, sie geht, der Hund geht.....)
wir - 1st. pers. pl - wir gehen
ihr - 2nd pers. pl. ihr geht
sie, nouns in pl. 3 rd. pers. pl. sie gehen, meine Schwestern gehen, die Hunde gehen...

Hope it helps

You're welcome. Report It
