Why do most people in australia live on the east coast and not to the west coast?

Why do most people in australia live on the east coast and not to the west coast?

All tho we are in Drought the main reason people live where they do in Australia is basically Water.

More Water More People.

The east coast is more populated with towns and cities. On the west coast Perth is the only major city in Western Australia.

If you look at the rainfall map of Australia that I have linked below you can see that the majority of rainfall in Australia is in the east coast and less on the west coast and how little rain falls in the centre of Australia.. therefore more people live on the east coast

It's because much of Western Australian coastline and interior is dry or desert.

The major cities (Melbourne, Sydney) have better employment opp.'s, housing, attractions, facilities, etc...

well this is a guess but australia was first settled in the east coast so the cities there today are bigger
and there's more rain

Wow, you guys have an interesting take on the facts sometimes. Western Australia actually has the fastest growth rate of any state in the country. We have some of the best beaches anywhere. We have a not inconsiderable population. Oh and by the way we have quite a few large cities too! But hey, youre all very funny and entertaining guys!! We also have all the usual shops and attractions that the eastern states have without the pollution problems. We have a booming mining industry and in fact we are one of the wealthiest states in the country.
*EDIT*
Interesting that Im getting thumbs down on this one. I LIVE IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA!! Oddly enough as a west aussie born and bred I know the place pretty well. Pmsl!!

Thats a good question, I think like someone else mentioned before, it has very much to do with the fact that the first settlers arrived in Sydney harbour, and they colonised easily accessable arable land radiating out from that point.

most immigrants tend to come to the big cities/ports, where jobs, food, accomodation and infrastructure are readily accessable.

There are a few reasons.

1. Settlement of Australia was on the Eastern coastline, which made it easier to move around the east coast then to the west coast.

2. The climate is not as friendly and welcoming to big cities, the northern coastline of Western Australia, experience cyclones and droughts.

3. The cities are built majority on the east coast, so people will go where the work is.

4. People enjoy a coastal lifestyle in Australia, the centre and many inland parts of Australia are inhabitable.

Easy, the east coast is temperate to tropical and has a lot more rainfall than the west coast. West coast climate is generally arid, developing to tropical in the north.

Because California is going to disappear into the ocean......

What do you mean by that?

Seriously, people live everywhere.. Not just on the east coast.. There are people living on the west coast as well.. Maybe the east coast is better!

What makes you ask that question?

I dont live on the coast, I live in the city.. I wish i lived on the coast..
