Australia is considered as a continent because it has its own weather pattern without being influenced by the surrounding ocean temperates. Different than Indonesian Islands, all of the Indonesian Islands weather are influence by surrounding seas.

Technically Australia is recognised as being the smallest continent. Like all the other continents it is surrounded by water. however some people (very few) class Australia as the largest island whilst others class greenland as the largest island.
