Is it really expensive to have a holiday in Australia?

I'm thinking of having a gap year after high school, and I would LOVE to get a Visitor Visa for Australia so I can vist it and see how it is. So, I was wondering if it was extremly expensive to just have a short holiday.
Thank you :]

I live in the US if that helps any...

It is hard to answer this question as Australia is neither cheap nor expensive to visit - It is more expensive than Asian countries and South America - but slightly cheaper than the US and europe.
It also depends on what you want to do here and the level of comfort you want - If you want to stay in hotels your money wan't last long but if you stay in backpacker accomodation it will be cheaper - another cheap option is to look at doing an exchange - like through "Rotary" or volunteering through "WWOOFERS" where you work on organic farms to pay for your board and I guess there would be other programes which you could access through "STAtravel"

our aussie dollar is sh it right now compared to urs so u'll lose there when you convert your money over to ours, and it depends where u want to go and what u want to do n see and stay of course.

(Gidday from Aus ) no its very cheap here you have to come and see our great country and visit sunny qld and visit aust zoo with us and stay at the sunshine coast for you holiday if i had the room to spare i would love to have you stay look up Queensland tourist site you wont be disappointed

Have a look at www, wotif .com.au a good indication on there.

If you do it as a backpacker instead of a standard tourist you can do it cheap. Stay at hostels instead of hotels, shared rooms but only $20 a night instead of $200. Travel by Greyhound coach instead of flying if you can handle it! There are lots of backpacker info/tour desks whihc can offer cheap tours and deals. Check out the Lonely Planet guide guide to Australia or their shoe-string guide to help plan your trip on a budget.

Yes it is more than expensive than the US. Simple things like a coffee will be almost double what you would pay in America.

But it's not as expensive as other countries where you would need $10,000 AU for a couple of weeks.
