You need a visa in advance. You can do this online at http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/, or if you are not eligable, you will need to apply through the other means listed on the site. The cost is AUD$20.00 per visa.

IF you travel there, remember that it is a very big country and you will need more time that you think to see it all, or even part of it.

You will need a passport (us passport) if you are in the states, also you will need a visa as well if you plan to stay for an extended amount of time.
