don't to dangerous at the moment wait till after it cools down

I used to be a (professional) aid worker in Africa and dreaded volunteers. However I was in war zones and well-meaning but clueless people were a big handicap.

Still, most of Africa is NOT a war zone and there are huge areas where volunteers are VERY useful IF you have the right skills. Can you teach midwives for example? Can you teach primary school teachers? What skills do you have?

If you have relevant skills, contact VSO (Voluntary Service overseas).

If you haven't, best stay away. You can't dig a well better or cheaper than an african.

I think the reason the volunteer experiences usually cost money is because it's really an experience for the VOLUNTEER, not for the people they are "helping". Coordinating volunteers, especially young ones, is actually really difficult, expensive and time consuming, and usually the Africans don't get much more than a cultural experience out of it.

Often churches have groups that go and build churches and buildings in Africa (as though the Africans can't build), and so you can get sponsored through your church, perhaps. But unless you have a particular skill that can't otherwise be found in an African in the country you want to go to, you're unlikely to get someone else to foot the bill.

Good luck with it, none the less.
