Iran used to be called as Persia formerly ruled by Shah before the Islamic Revolution lead by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The last Shah of Iran was Shah Reza Pahlavi.

Incidentally - it's neighbor Iraq was previously known as Mesopotamia and was ruled by Kings.
