im going to ethiopia this coming summer and I havent been there for over 8 years and When i left i was really yung so any advice will be acceptabl one travel tips and culture Visa Requirements
Visas are required for all visitors to Ethiopia.
Medical
鈥? Vaccinations for Ethiopia should be arranged prior to travel and should include tetanus, diphtheria, polio, meningitis, typhoid, hepatitis A&B, yellow fever, and others as recommended by your doctor.
鈥? Be sure to have a valid health certificate for yellow fever. Proof of immunization may be requested upon arrival at the airport.
鈥? A vaccination against cholera (or a note to the effect that it is contraindicated) is also required for any person who has visited or transited a cholera-infected area within six days prior to arrival in Ethiopia. Proof of immunization (or contraindication) may be requested at the airport upon arrival.
鈥?Malaria is not common in Addis Ababa because of the high altitude. However, if you are planning to go out of Addis, it is advisable to take precautions. You may want to consult a travel clinic before arrival. Remember that most prophylactics need to be taken 2 weeks before entering a malaria area.
鈥?Some drugs are not available in Ethiopia. If you have any special needs, it is advisable to bring a supply with you. A supply of malaria prophylaxis is also recommended for travellers.
鈥?Hand wipes and hand-sanitizing waterless agents are useful, since adequate hand?washing facilities are not always available.
Items to Bring:
Clothing
Temperatures depend upon season and altitude. The temperature in Addis Ababa during the summer months varies from 15 to 25 degrees Centigrade. During the rainy and winter months, the temperature can drop to near zero Centigrade, especially in higher elevations. It is acceptable for woman to wear pants but, similar to many work environments, jeans are not recommended in a formal work setting. The following is advisable:
鈥?A sweater or jacket.
鈥?A rain jacket or umbrella.
鈥?Comfortable long skirts or pants for travel.
鈥?Sweater or pullover that can be removed when it warms up in the afternoon.
鈥?A bathing suit; there are a number of heated pools.
Money
It is suggested that you bring US Traveller's cheques or cash old US$ bills (pre-1994) are not accepted.
When exchanging traveller's cheques for birr, the bank will charge US $1 per $100. (You might not be able to change for US$) The exchange rate is approximately 1 $US = 8.68 Birr (November 2004). It is difficult to exchange money outside of Addis. Visa and American Express can only be used in two hotels in Addis, and a cash advance is unavailable.
Twenty U.S. dollars (cash only) is required for departure tax; thus, a certain amount of cash is advised. Departure tax payment is unacceptable in Birr, travellers' cheques, credit cards, non-US dollar currency, or in notes larger than $20 (for one person).
Airport Customs & Immigration
鈥?You may be asked to declare all foreign currency on the blue currency declaration form upon arrival at Bole International Airport.
鈥?There is no restriction on the import of foreign currency into Ethiopia. There are, however, tightly controlled export rules.
鈥?When you change money, you are strongly advised to keep the exchange forms in case you want to change money back into US$ upon leaving.
鈥?If you are carrying a laptop computer, video cameras or other electronic equipment, Customs may register it in your passport upon arrival. This is a simple procedure. Upon departure, Customs will check to see that you are leaving the country with the same equipment registered in your passport.
鈥?Although there is a GSM system, your cellular phone will not work without a SIM card. There is a two year waiting list for obtaining SIM cards.
Foreign Exchange at the Airport
It is possible to exchange money at the airport after Immigration, before going through Customs. The Bank booth is to the far left of the baggage collection area. The two major hotel in Addis, the Hilton and Sheraton, also have convenient and efficient money exchange offices.
Airport Pickup
鈥?Access to the airport Arrival Terminal is restricted.
鈥?Upon clearing Customs and Immigration, you should exit the building and cross the service road to reach the waiting area, where a taxi / car will be parked.
