Love/confidence scams are very common on the Internet. Don't send money by Western Union to anyone you haven't met in person and trust 100%. The reasons scammers use WU is because they can receive the money totally anonymous, they can never be traced, and the money can never be recovered.

You should be able to do a background check. I am not sure if it will tell you what you are looking for though.
